St. Edwards Tops Southwestern 3-0 in Women’s Soccer Preseason Friendly

Posted on

The Hilltoppers scored three late goals to top the Pirates, 3-0, in a friendly match held on a scorching Tuesday evening at St. Edwards University’s Lewis-Chen Family Field. This was the first match for both women’s sides on the season, and had one thirty-minute period, two fifteen-minute periods, and a closing thirty-minute period.

Chances came early and often for the home side. A stout Southwestern defense repelled the early chances, but was unable to put together any counter attacks of merit for the first period. Two dangerous chances in the waning seconds of the first period were not to be for the Hilltoppers, with an excellent chance saved, and the rebound sent over the bar as time expired.

Southwestern grew into the match in the fifteen-minute second period, though St. Edwards continued to enjoy the majority of possession, despite the plentiful substitutions. The Pirate offense peaked in the 49th minute with their solitary shot, which Hilltopper netminder easily collected. St. Edward’s immediately responded with counter requiring a point blank save, though the attack was judged offside.

The hosts continued to press their advantage following the third intermission, and their efforts were rewarded by a 67th minute goal, coming off a glancing header played into the box after an uncleared free kick. A goal in the 74th minute, a redirected header from a corner kick, created some needed breathing room, and an 89th minute goal sealed the deal for the dominant Hilltoppers.

St. Edwards finished the match with ten shots on goal and eleven corner kicks.

St. Edwards’ first regular season match sees them traveling to take on Barry University in Miami Shores on August 30th. Southwestern will head north to Belton to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor on August 31st for their 2018 season kickoff.
